1971: Soul Train, a new, weekly TV show that showcased current R&B artists, makes its debut in the US. The first broadcast featured Gladys Knight And The Pips, Eddie Kendricks and Honey Cone.

1965: Bob Dylan appears at Carnegie Hall in New York and introduces his new touring band made up of guitarist Robbie Robertson, organist Garth Hudson, bassist Rick Danko, pianist Richard Manual and drummer Levon Helm. They will become known simply as The Band.

1980: "Upside Down" by Diana Ross goes to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 where it will stay for four weeks, becoming her biggest solo hit.

1964: The Animals had their only number one hit on Billboard's Hot 100 when "House of the Rising Sun" reached the top. To promote the group in the US, disc jockeys were sent boxes of animal crackers wrapped with special promotional material. The band would continue to turn out hits like "We Gotta Get Out of This Place", "It's My Life", "Don't Bring Me Down", "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", "Monterey" and "San Franciscan Nights" before splitting up at the end of the decade.
