1967: Bobbi Gentry's "Ode To Billie Joe" claimed the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100. The record would also become an international hit and later win three Grammy Awards. In 1976 the song was adapted into a motion picture which showed Billie Joe and his girlfriend throwing a rag doll off the Tallahatchie Bridge, although Bobbie Gentry has never revealed what she had in mind when she wrote the song.
